Surprising Things That Make Your Home Vulnerable to Burglary Part 2

Surprising Things That Make Your Home Vulnerable to Burglary Part 2Some homes are more targeted by burglars than others, and the things that make your home a target aren’t always obvious.

Out of the hundreds or even thousands of homes in any given community, why do burglars choose to target certain homes over others? The fact of the matter is there are many things that make some homes more vulnerable to burglary than others, and in order to truly protect your home and your belongings, you need to know what they are. That can be easier said than done, as what makes your home a target won’t always be obvious. In our last blog, we went over a few surprising things that make your home vulnerable to burglary. Keep reading to learn more.

#6. You park your fancy car in the driveway.

As we mentioned time and time again in our last blog, breaking into a home is risky for burglars, and they need to have a good reason to take that risk. If you have a luxury automobile in your driveway, burglars see it as a sign that you are wealthy and probably aren’t afraid to splurge on expensive jewelry or electronics. While this is sometimes true, some people save their whole lives in order to be able to afford that kind of car, and others may have bought an older, less expensive model. But burglars only see that BMW or Lexus; they have no idea what your financial situation looks like. It’s always a good idea to keep fancy or luxury automobiles parked inside your garage.

#7. You use cash.

While electronics and jewelry are also high on the list, stealing cash is the number one reason why a burglar breaks into someone’s home. One study found that 80 percent of burglars break into homes with the intent to steal cash. If you do decide to use cash, keep it with you. If you don’t feel comfortable keeping too much cash with you, consider keeping it in your bank account or a safety deposit box. If you prefer to keep it in your home, it’s a good idea to invest in a safe of some sort.

#8. You live alone.

One study found that burglars are less likely to target homes that have more people living in them. That’s why people who live alone or with one other person tend to be targeted by burglars more often than people who have kids or roommates. We’re not here to tell you that you have to start having kids or that you need to find some roommates, but if you live alone or with your spouse, it’s a good idea to take some extra precautions when it comes to your security.

#9. You have a lot of locks but no real security system.Vulnerable2 2

It used to be that locks were the number one thing people relied on for home security. And while a good deadbolt can do a lot to protect your home, technology has come a long way, and there’s more to a home security system than just locks. In fact, if you have a lot of visible locks without a security system or obvious cameras, it could actually make your home more of a target for burglars. Why? Because heavy duty locks tell burglars that you have something worth protecting and, therefore, worth stealing. This is one of the reasons why merely having security cameras on your property can help to deter burglars.

#10. You stick with the same routine every day.

Many of us have daily routines. We wake up at the same time, get dressed, eat breakfast and then go to work and come home at the same time every day. Some burglars will watch a house that they’re targeting for weeks or even months before they actually break into it to get to know your routine. They want to know when you’re gone and when you’re home. They want to know when the mail is delivered and the trash is picked up. We’re not advocating for finding a new career with a different routine, but it is important to know the risks of being gone at the same time every day. Believe it or not, the middle of the day is actually the most common times for break-ins. Just because it’s day time, it does not mean that your home is safe. So, if you’re gone during the day every day, take some added precautions with your home’s security.
